Overpopulation in Houston
What we are doing about the pet overpopulation problem in the Greater Houston/Galveston area.
Community Outreach: Preventing Homelessness at the Source
Since the beginning, SAVE Rescue has made community outreach a core part of our mission. We know that the most humane and effective way to reduce the number of animals needing rescue is to prevent unwanted litters before they happen.
When we encounter families or individuals in need, we don’t turn away—we step in. If puppies or kittens are surrendered for adoption, SAVE ensures that the mother and any other unaltered pets in the household are spayed or neutered, stopping the cycle of overpopulation at its source.
SAVE also works closely with hundreds of good Samaritans who discover kittens or care for feral cat colonies. Through hands-on support and guidance, we help them trap, spay or neuter, and vaccinate all cats in a defined area—creating lasting, community-wide solutions.
When kittens are friendly and socialized, they may enter SAVE’s adoption program or our Traps to Laps Program and be placed into loving homes. In partnership with trusted veterinarians, SAVE coordinates spay/neuter surgeries and vaccinations for every animal involved in our outreach efforts.
Because the Community Outreach Team is currently focused on serving Galveston County animals, SAVE Rescue proudly funds these community outreach surgeries, made possible through the generosity of compassionate supporters like you.
Our Impact
Over the past year SAVE Rescue has helped:
135 dogs get spayed or neutered
200 owned cats altered
1,100 community and feral cats fixed
That’s nearly 2,400 animals directly helped—and countless more spared from being born into homelessness.
